PowerUp! Pre-Apprenticeship Program
Launched in 2020, the PowerUp Pre-Apprenticeship Program is a transformative workforce initiative addressing barriers to employment for populations traditionally left behind. Supported by United Way's
CareerReady ATL with annual funding, the program prioritizes justice-involved individuals, adults, and opportunity youth—regardless of GED status—providing equitable opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Since its inception, PowerUp has achieved remarkable outcomes. To date, 75 adults and youth have graduated, with an impressive 87% employment rate across seven industries, including public safety, skilled trades, and advanced manufacturing. Notably, 20% of graduates have advanced into full apprenticeships, reflecting the program's success in building sustainable career pathways. PowerUp’s impact is amplified through strong employer partnerships.
Organizations like the Cobb County Fire Department, the Plumbing Heating and Cooling Contractors Association, and Lockheed Martin have provided training, mentorship, and incorporated PowerUp into their recruitment systems. This approach has created systemic change, with employers relying on the program as a recurring talent pipeline. By combining skills training, certifications, and wraparound support, PowerUp empowers individuals and strengthens local workforce infrastructure, fostering a more inclusive and dynamic economy.
